Compassion for the elderly and infirm that has come to characterize Thomas S. Monson's ministry soon will be embraced more fully by the worldwide church he leads.
The LDS Church is adding "to care for the poor and needy" to its longstanding "threefold mission," which is to preach the LDS gospel, purify members' lives and provide saving ordinances such as baptism to those who have died.
This mission first was coined by late LDS President Spencer W. Kimball in the 1980s and since then has been repeated as a mantra by the church's more than 13 million members.
The new group of phrases will be described as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' "purposes," rather than missions, and will be spelled out in the next edition of the LDS Church Handbook of Instructions , due out next year, church spokesman Scott Trotter confirmed this week.
"Caring for the poor and needy," Trotter said, "has always been a basic tenet of the [LDS] Church."
Elevating it to one of the faith's major purposes brings added emphasis.
"This is a dramatic move and very important message," said Jan Shipps, an Indiana-based American religion historian who has spent decades studying the LDS Church. "It's not that Mormons haven't already been caring for the poor and needy with its humanitarian program. It's just that this moves it to the top of their priorities, along with proselytizing and temple work."
It tells Mormons to be philanthropic in ways that go well beyond helping the faithful, Shipps said. "And it's a move that tells the world that Mormonism is Christian more effectively than changing the logo to make the words 'Jesus Christ' stand out."
This blog is a place for me to store gems that I don't have another spot for at the moment.

Government power, Constitution, Religious Freedom
An apostle for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said religious freedom is being threatened by societal forces intimidating those with religious points of view from having a voice in the public square
One of the great fundamentals of our inspired constitution, relied on by Oyun of Mongolia and countless others struggling for freedom in many countries in the world, is the principle that the people are the source of government power. This principle of popular sovereignty was first written and applied on the American continent over 200 years ago. A group of colonies won independence from a king, and their representatives had the unique opportunity of establishing a new government. They did this by creating the first written constitution that has survived to govern a modern nation. The United States Constitution declared the source of government power, delegated that power to a government, and regulated its exercise.
Along with many other religious people, we affirm that God is the ultimate source of power and that, under Him, it is the people’s inherent right to decide their form of government. Sovereign power is not inherent in a state or nation just because its leaders have the power that comes from force of arms. And sovereign power does not come from the divine right of a king, who grants his subjects such power as he pleases or is forced to concede, as in Magna Carta. As the preamble to our constitution states: “We the People of the United States . . . do ordain and establish this Constitution.”

Freedom of Choice
Gordon B. Hinckley, President of the Mormon Church, April 1998:
We must and can respect other religions, and must do so. We must recognize the great good they accomplish. We must teach our children to be tolerant and friendly toward those who are not of our faith. We can do work with those of other religions in the defense of those values which have made our civilization great, and our society distinctive. We can and do work with those of other religions in various undertakings in the everlasting fight against social evils which threaten the treasured values which are so important to all of us. These people are not of our faith but they are our friends, neighbors, in a variety of causes. We are pleased to lend our strengths to their efforts.A most complete, fair, and respectful discourse on freedom of choice, given in Ireland: http://www.religiousfreedom.com/conference/Germany/kearney.htm
The Bees and the Poppy Fields
The clover fields were more distant than the poppy fields. So the bees went out during the day to the poppy fields which were closer, and came back at night. They did this all year.
That winter, the beekeeper found that there was no honey. They had done what was easier and more enjoyable.

Leaves of Many Colors - an Interesting Tapestry of Differences
Trees in fall, all different colors
In the summer, they looked much the same
Differences make it interesting
So it is with different culture, people and such.
We need to explore things that are different and people that are different than we are.
Then in the spring, you go out and look up into the leaves of the towering maple trees. Millions of leaves. Each turned slightly differently, each reaching for the light.
It's like us, except: are we each reaching for the light?
Some reach for the darker side, some aren't growing.
The Lord and his described ways are the only source of true light, knowledge, and happiness.

Let a bird loose, and if it belongs to you, it will return
A whole bunch of things roll together or relate in this package.
We WANT to return to the Lord because we love Him - IF we have learned to love Him and felt His love. It's not force that does it. He is not about force.
A highly Dominant person (investigate "DISE") wants lots of room to explore and make his own decisions - don't you dare interfere. Paradoxically, that same person exercises a lot of minute control of others - including family members. Do this, don't do that, why did you do it (challenge question).
A person grows by exploring and questioning. He becomes stronger, if he has been taught by (and adheres to/loves) the correct principles. A sheltered, overly controlled kid doesn't grow.
Every man, woman, and child of us is a leader, or should be, in the true principles of leadership (not = bossing). I like how Covey developes it in the 8th habit; a very worth while read. There is also the Leadership Pill by Muchnick (not known to be related to my wife). We should find our own voice, but we should provide encouragement to others to excel, be their best, explore, experience, have opportunities to lead and be challenged, learn and grow. This is about being an agent of God in helping life-long, eternal progress.
It is not good policy to talk about an x spouse, but here the point I want to make is easier to illustrate if I do. You will see.
(Oh, her favorite bird: she imagined herself an eagle.)
My x told me of how she got her daughter "GV" into BYU. [Nickname changed to protect the innocent. The BYU result was positive, and GV became a truely outstanding woman married to a fantastic and wise man (two terms as Bishop). My x also told me of GV's father and GV used to set on GV's bed, just talking about things. It bored my x. After my x and GV's father divorced, GV and her father were estranged for some years due to the divorce environment, a sad thing for me to see.
The father, now deceased, was not a church member, not religious.
I remember exactly where I was standing (funny, these memories) when I received a call from the father who seemed a bit concerned about the lack of relationship with his daughter and was open enough to ask. I told him that he, sitting on her bed, taught her to think. So GV learned to think of things. She went to BYU, which he wasn't happy about, and had her thoughts expanded. He was a valuable part of her becoming a fantastic person who accomplished/probably accomplishes a lot for betterment of mankind.
Those two were mad at me for talking to him. But I gave the father CONFIDENCE ENOUGH in his value to her, to reach out to GV in spite of things, and they did have some great visits back and forth after that before he died.
The bird returned.
There are times that you have to do what is right and let the consequences follow; honesty before loyalty, truth before tradition, doing what's right before comfort. I am forever glad that I talked to him.
So what kind of bird are you? Soaring is wonderful.

Quilt of Holes
As I faced my Maker at the last judgment, I knelt before the Lord along with all the other souls..
Before each of us laid our lives like the squares of a quilt in many piles; an angel sat before each of us sewing our quilt squares together into a tapestry that is our life.
But as my angel took each piece of cloth off the pile, I noticed how ragged and empty each of my squares was. They were filled with giant holes. Each square was labeled with a part of my life that had been difficult, the challenges and temptations I was faced with in every day life. I saw hardships that I endured, which were the largest holes of all.
I glanced around me. Nobody else had such squares.. Other than a tiny hole here and there, the other tapestries were filled with rich color and the bright hues of worldly fortune. I gazed upon my own life and was disheartened.
My angel was sewing the ragged pieces of cloth together, threadbare and empty, like binding air.
Finally the time came when each life was to be displayed, held up to the light, the scrutiny of truth. The others rose; each in turn, holding up their tapestries. So filled their lives had been. My angel looked upon me,and nodded for me to rise.
My gaze dropped to the ground in shame. I hadn't had all the earthly fortunes. I had love in my life, and laughter. But there had also been trials of illness, and wealth, and false accusations that took from me my world, as I knew it. I had to start over many times. I often struggled with the temptation to quit, only to somehow muster the strength to pick up and begin again. I spent many nights on my knees in prayer, asking for help and guidance in my life. I had often been held up to ridicule, which I endured painfully, each time offering it up to the Father in hopes that I would not melt within my skin beneath the judgmental gaze of those who unfairly judged me.
And now, I had to face the truth. My life was what it was, and I had to accept it for what it was.
I rose and slowly lifted the combined squares of my life to the light.. An awe-filled gasp filled the air. I gazed around at the others who stared at me with wide eyes.
Then, I looked upon the tapestry before me. Light flooded the many holes, creating an image, the face of Christ. Then our Lord stood before me, with warmth and love in His eyes. He said, 'Every time you gave over your life to Me, it became My life, My hardships, and My struggles.
Each point of light in your life is when you stepped aside and let Me shine through, until there was more of Me than there was of you...'
May all our quilts be threadbare and worn, allowing Christ to shine through!
God determines who walks into your life .it's up to you to decide who you let walk away, who you let stay, and who you refuse to let go.'
Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak
kindly. And leave the rest to God.

Moore and Sasnette
In 1962 I heard of Leonard Moore chorale. In Bothel I hometaught widow Beth (now deceased), later daughter Kathleen. Got our keeshond from son Jim. Kids are back East now, music professors all. Beth wrote beautiful song for RS in a week, painted. Oh, if we could get them back. Kathleen: soprano, sat front row of chapel, joyful voice to the rafters. http://www.classicalsinger.com/sites/index.php?pt=1&user_id=javascript:void(0)79841

Special friendship
Sometimes in life, you find a special friend;
Someone who changes your life
just by being part of it.
Someone who makes you laugh
until you can't stop;
Someone who makes you believe
that there really is good in the world.
Someone who convinces you
that there really is an unlocked door
just waiting for you to open it.
This is Forever Friendship.

Someone who makes you believe
that there really is good in the world.

just waiting for you to open it.

Pure FDA poppycock; overregulation
I've discovered Neoteric Diabetic Skin Cream due to my weird skin on bottom of my feet and neuropathy as a result of chemo. Countless sources link the results of chemo and diabetes closely together in effect and in how to take care of it. This stuff really does help - somewhat, but definitely somewhat. But FDA can't stand for them to say that it works. They sent a letter to the manufacturer. This harmless cream - they'd like it to be submitted to a 30 million dollar trial and probably subject to being prescribed. No wonder we have the most expensive health care in the world and the lowest longivity rate among all the "advanced" nations.
The details of this statement are distortions of the fact; the closest to the truth is "to treat". But they don't claim to treat the disease, they claim to help mediate the affects of the disease. From the letter dated November 26, 2002 from the FDA in Denver:
"Based on the claims made for these products to affect the structure or function of the body, and-to treat, prevent, and mitigate disease, they are "drugs" within the meaning of section 201(g) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (the Act). Moreover, these products are "new drugs" [section 201(p) of the Act] because there is not substantial evidence that these products are generally recognized as safe and effective for their intended uses. Since these products are "new drugs" they may not be marketed in the United States without approved new drug applications [section 505(a) of the Act]. "

A great thinker: Born Again Experience
This web page is by a minister. In there, he says: I was delightfully surprised to find so many "born again" scriptures in the Book of Mormon. For example…
"…For, said he, I have repented of my sins, and have been redeemed of the Lord; behold, I am born of the Spirit. And the Lord said unto me, Marvel not that all mankind, yea, men, and women, all nations, kindreds, tongues and people, must be born again; Yea, born of God, changed from their carnal and fallen state, to a state of righteousness, being redeemed of God, becoming his sons and daughters; and thus they become new creatures; and unless they do this, they can in no wise inherit the kingdom of God…" –Mosiah 11:186-188 (all scriptures quoted from RLDS 1908 version)
That verse, I must say, sounds so "Baptist." And I believe every word of it.

Husbands for sale in New York City
A store that sells husbands has just opened in New York City, where a woman may go to choose a husband. Among the instructions at the entrance is a description of how the store operates. You may visit the store ONLY ONCE!
There are six floors and the attributes of the men increase as the shopper ascends the flights. There is, however, a catch. ... You may choose any man from a particular floor, or you may choose to go up a floor, but you cannot go back down except to exit the building! So, a woman goes to the Husband Store to find a husband. .
On the first floor the sign on the door reads: Floor 1 - These men have jobs and love the Lord.
The second floor sign reads: Floor 2 - These men have jobs, love the Lord, and love kids.
The third floor sign reads: Floor 3 - These men have jobs, love the Lord, love kids, and are extremely good looking.
"Wow," she thinks, but feels compelled to keep going.
She goes to the fourth floor and sign reads: Floor 4 - These men have jobs, love the Lord, love kids, are drop-dead good looking and help with the housework.
"Oh, mercy me!" she exclaims, "I can hardly stand it!"
Still, she goes to the fifth floor and sign reads: Floor 5 - These men have jobs, love the Lord, love kids, are drop- dead gorgeous, help with the housework, and have a strong romantic streak.
She is so tempted to stay, but she goes to the sixth floor and the sign reads: Floor 6 - You are visitor 4,363,012 to this floor. There are no men on this floor. This floor exists solely as proof that women are impossible to please.

Are they now "Suggestions" or yet commandments?
“Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy” (Exodus 20:8).
The Lord has given the Sabbath day for your benefit and has commanded you to keep it holy. Observing the Sabbath will bring you closer to the Lord and to your family. It will give you needed rest and rejuvenation.
Many uplifting activities are appropriate for the Sabbath. Worship the Lord, attend church, spend quiet time with your family, study the gospel, write letters, write in your journal, do family history work, and visit the sick or homebound. Your dress before, during, and after church meetings should show respect for the Sabbath.
When seeking a job, share with your potential employer your desire to attend your Sunday meetings and keep the Sabbath day holy. Many employers value employees with these personal convictions. Whenever possible, choose a job that does not require you to work on Sundays.
Sunday is not a holiday or a day for recreation or athletic events. Do not seek entertainment or spend money on this day. Let your friends know what your standards are so they will not try to persuade you to participate in activities that are not appropriate for the Sabbath.

Beyond the Mark
From Dean L. Larsen, “Looking beyond the Mark,” Ensign, Nov 1987, 11
"I am much more concerned about understanding the admonitions of Samuel the Lamanite as he stood on the walls of the city of Zarahemla and called the rebellious Nephites to repentance than I am about identifying the location of that city in today’s geography.
I am more vitally interested in what the Father and the Son commissioned Joseph Smith to do, and the fruits of his prophetic labors, than I am in whether he made mention of one divine personage or two in his initial recounting of the First Vision.
I am going to make a greater effort to be worthy of holding an ordained office in the priesthood of God, and be less concerned about confirming the exact date and place of the appearance of Peter, James, and John to restore this divine authority and power.
I think I am going to try to keep in my mind more consistently the perfect pattern for human relationships that the Savior demonstrated in his own life and try with greater effort to emulate that pattern of caring, love, and sacrifice.
I am going to try to be more earnest in teaching what the Savior would have me teach and be less concerned about having my own biases aired. If I am going to influence others, I want to influence them toward the things that promote faith rather than to unsettle them with speculation and questions that cannot be resolved.
I think I will not want to stifle a wholesome appetite for learning, for reaching out to new levels of understanding. But as I push toward these new horizons, I will want to come back always to the circle of my established faith, and I will continually nourish that faith with a prayerful study of God’s revealed truths.

Discovering ourselves
“Our real selves are all waiting for us in Him. The more I resist Him and try to live on my own, the more I become dominated by my own heredity and upbringing and natural desires . . . . It is when I turn to Christ, when I give myself up to His Personality, that I first begin to have a real personality of my own.”
